The University of Michigan School of Education Advanced Education Technology Certificate is a competency-based teacher certification that aligns with the ISTE Standards for Educators. The program develops educators who will use educational technologies for learning in meaningful and transformative ways. The program is unique in that it has school administrators, technology coaches and K-12 teachers working together on developing a common research-based framework with technology in learning, allowing for rich discussions from both the administrative and teaching perspectives.  In addition, participants will be connecting the ISTE competencies in the certificate program to their own K-12 classrooms and schools, thus creating lessons and professional development projects around their school's particular needs and demographics. The program has a strong focus on pedagogy and how to design instruction to enhance learning goals when integrating technology tools in blended, remote, and face to face instruction. Once the semester is completed, participants will have developed a portfolio meeting all seven of the ISTE Standards for Educators (nationally recognized standards in K-16 teaching with technology) and participants who complete the program at the satisfactory level will earn a certificate in Advanced Education Technology from the University of Michigan, School of Education. In addition, participants will have developed a systematic competency in teaching and learning with technology, that includes;

  • Prepare educators to become digital leaders in their school district and learning communities

  • Developing a common language and knowledge on how to apply research-informed frameworks in technology education such as the Triple E Framework and other education technology framework models to both evaluate integrate technology in their K-12 classroom

  • Design blended and online learning experiences that enhance student learning and build community

  • Apply technology to build professional networks and participate in teaching and learning online

  • Understand how to integrate technology to create collaboration opportunities for both student learning and educators own professional learning

  • Leverage current and past research on education technology and the learning sciences in order to apply the research to instructional methods when integrating technology

  • Applying education technology to instructional design principles

  • Understand the digital inequities that exist and how to fully participate in advocacy work around digital inequities

  • Understand how to use digital tools for assessment in face to face, online and blended learning experiences

  • Prepare and teach the next generation about creating a positive approach to digital mental health

WHY

This program is the “next step” for many educators and school administrators.  While many digital learning tools are integrated into the program, the program is not about learning a lot of new digital tools, rather it is about learning good pedagogical and research-informed strategies to use when integrating technology and evaluating the use of technology in learning.  It provides a common framework for teachers and administrators to talk about digital tools in learning to make sure the tools are supporting good learning practices.  Finally, the program is grounded in issues of digital equity and understanding that digital access for students is necessary and that educators have the power to contribute to or to mitigate inequities created by digital technologies.

WHO

  • For anyone new to K-12 instructional coaching, this is a great program to build some coaching tools and strategies.  
  • This is an excellent program for K-12 teachers who are interested in becoming technology coordinators, instructional designers, technology coaches, or just better at integrating technology in their face to face or remote instruction.
  • The program is useful for K-12 administrators who want to understand how technology can support their K-12 teachers in their face to face or remote instruction.
